Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to Dodgers.

It is official the Cubs have traded Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to the Dodgers for Blake DeWitt, pitcher Brett Wallach and pitcher Kyle Smit. The Cubs also sent 2.5 million to the Dodgers to help the cost of the players. Here is more information from CCO.COM.

At a first glace I feel the Cubs did not get enough value in return for Lilly and Theriot but Blake DeWitt is a valuable utiliy guy who is under team control for a while. The two arms the Cubs received are not highly regarded but are young and have a ton of upside. The Cubs also save money this season along with next season because Theriot is expected to make 4 million in arbitration so this deal looks better that it originally did on the surface. The only thing that bothers me is the Cubs could have gotten Kelly Johnson for Theriot and Russell which I view as a great trade for the Cubs but again Johnson would be owed more money and the Cubs want to cut cost.

Overall not a terrible trade but not a great one either.

Siketon’s Blake DeWitt traded from Dodgers to …

The idea of becoming a part of the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network to hear hometown boy Blake DeWitt play must have seemed a good one to those running 1520 KRHW-AM in Sikeston.

Folks in Sikeston can still listen to the legendary Vin Scully detailing the Dodgers’ exploits, but he won’t be talking about Blake DeWitt unless the Dodgers are playing the Cubs. Online reports indicate DeWitt was sent to the Cubs as part of a trade in which Los Angeles acquired pitcher Ted Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot.

Ryan Ludwick? Really?

The Padres have made another trade today, acquiring Ryan Ludwick from the Cardinals and sending two minor league players to Cleveland.  St Louis gets Indian pitcher Jake Westbrook.

I think we all know our outfield hasn’t exactly lit the lamp with the bat this year.  Scott Hairston and Will Venable have been league average hitters; Tony Gwynn Jr OPS+ hovers at 82.  Ludwick addresses that need in a big way.  His OPS+ is 120; he’ll be the best offensive outfielder on the club as soon as he’s assigned a number.

My concern for the Padres, in making trades, was that they not upset their run prevention model.  That is why I am not completely sold on the Miguel Tejada deal.  I have no such reservations with this move.  Ludwick is enjoying his best defensive year (based on Dewan plus/minus; he is +5 defensively), which immediately makes him the second-best outfielder on the club behind Gwynn.  He can also play all three positions defensively, giving Bud Black tons of flexibility with the roster.

Ludwick became expendable in St Louis with the stellar play of Jon Jay.  Ludwick is making $5.45M this season, is arbitration eligible for the 2011 campaign, and becomes a free-agent in 2012.  It might be hard to believe, but the Cardinals dumped salary with this move. I don’t know if this is a two-month rental or if the Padres will try to keep him for 2011.  The cynic in me says this is a 2-month rental.

No matter.  THIS is the bat the Padres needed to get, and THIS is the defender they need to bring in with that bat.  Great move by the Padres.

Welcome to San Diego, Ryan Ludwick.  You will like it here.

Undocumented Claims of the Horus/Osiris …

Remember the Zeitgeist movie that was devoted to allegations of Jesus being nothing more than a combination of pagan deities? Here’s another interesting thing that counters the claims that the attributes of Jesus were copied from Egyptian deities by the gospel writers to create their own new god.

Of all the pagan copycat candidates, Osiris and Horus are two that look if any to be a major threat. Egypt after all is not far from Palestine, and Jews did live in Egypt; it is not theoretically improbable that they could steal an idea for a Jesus from this place.

But did they? The field is rife with claims, but as usual there is a great deal of filching of Christian terms to describe Egyptian events (not all of it with bad intentions) and a great deal of non-citation of sources for fabulous claims.

Was the story of Jesus stolen from that of the Egyptian deites Horus and Osiris?

Ted Lilly Traded! Randy Newman Is Full Of …

Most people know Randy Newman as “that guy” who usually shows up on the Oscars singing some sappy song from the latest Pixar hit (e.g. “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” from Toy Story).

But we here at the Ted Lilly Fan Club know him more from his 1983 opus, “I Love LA” which is somewhat of a counter song to Cubbie favorite, “Go Cubs Go” (ably sung by everyone’s favorite Steve Goodman).

And, frankly, in response to that song and Ted’s trade today to the LA Dodgers, we feel like Randy Newman is full of sh*t. Why?

Five reasons why the TLFC Hates This Trade, Randy Newman, LA:

First off, in the song, he actually rips Chicago in opening lines, “Let’s leave Chicago to the Eskimos…That town’s a little bit too rugged” so Newman, in fact, is admitting that he’s a lightweight and can’t handle a little honest, blue collar weather (hint: Ted Lilly can)

Second, the Dodgers had their chance with Ted back in 1996 when they wisely drafted him in the 23rd Round (Ted asked to be drafted in this round out of respect for Michael Jordan–the only other man who’s level of competiveness matches TLs). Reminds us of the “Simpsons” episode when Artie Ziff, after dumping Marge in high school, becomes a millionaire later in life and unsuccessfully attempts to woo Marge back. She (like Ted will do w/ LA) only hangs out with him out of pity for a little bit. Long analogy? Yep…but that’s what copious amounts of Sanka will do to a Fan Club. Speaking of Sanka…

Third, no one in LA drinks Sanka (official coffee-like beverage of the Ted Lilly Fan Club). Everyone drinks fancy smancy coffee that cost a fortune and are made from real bits of aborginal Indians from coffee producing regions around the world (marketed as “organic”)

Fourth, with all the unrest in the LA Dodgers organizations (e.g. owners in midst of divorce, underperforming stars like Kemp, the addition of former ChiSox D’Bag Scotty Posednik), we think that this move is as much about asking Ted to conduct team therapy sessions as it is about his crafty Lillyhammer out-pitch. TLFC no likey at all.

And, finally, the Ted Lilly Fan Club (the official unofficial home of Ted Lilly) HATES LA. We hate the city, hate the apathetic fans, hate that they re-made “90210″ w/ no Dylan or Steve Sanders (Mrs. TLFC asked us to include that one), hate the smog, hate the traffic, hate the urban sprawl, hate recent seasons of “Curb“, etc. etc. etc.

No idea what this trade means for the Ted Lilly Fan Club…maybe we pack up the TLFC-branded Airstream RV and head west? maybe we go “Sopranos” black? maybe, as above poll suggests, we should vomit repeatedly? Time will tell, TedHeads….keep the faith, we’ll keep drinking.
